Terms of use

A shared map. Clear ground rules.

The terms for exploring Aloka, contributing observations, and using its street-condition information.

Updated

Welcome to the Lightmap.

These terms cover the Aloka website and map, operated by the Aloka team. By using the service you agree to these terms. The privacy policy explains data handling, and the community guidelines explain acceptable contributions.

You must be legally able to agree to these terms where you live. If a parent or guardian’s permission is required, obtain it before creating an account. An organization’s representative must have authority to act for that organization.

Public browsing is free. A business data-sheet request is an enquiry, not a purchase or an agreement to supply a commercial service. Any future paid service requires its own clearly stated terms.

Evidence helps. It cannot promise a safe walk.

Aloka describes recorded lighting, activity, visibility, and community observations. Placelight is not a probability of safety, a crime prediction, an emergency service, or a certification of a place, person, route, or accessibility condition.

Coverage is limited and source records can be incomplete, outdated, or wrong. Opening hours can change. Routes may miss a closure, a barrier, or a change in pavement conditions. Compare confidence, dates, and unverified stretches, and respond to the conditions in front of you.

Use local emergency services when urgent assistance is needed. Do not put yourself at risk to verify a condition or submit a Lantern. A dark or low-confidence area means evidence is limited; it is not a designation that a neighbourhood or its residents are dangerous.

A pseudonym, with responsibility.

Keep your sign-in email and credentials under your control, do not impersonate someone, and contact us if an account appears compromised. You are responsible for activity you authorize through your account.

Contributions must reflect your observations at the stated place and time. Do not coordinate false submissions, create accounts to evade limits, manipulate scores, or interfere with the service. Contribution limits and verification requirements may change to address abuse.

Your observations help a public resource.

You retain any rights you hold in your contributions. Submit only material you are entitled to share. Do not include private information, descriptions that identify people, defamatory allegations, discriminatory content, or material that infringes another person’s rights.

By submitting, you give Aloka a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free permission to store, process, moderate, redact, reproduce, and display that contribution to operate the service, and to derive and distribute aggregate street-condition information. This permission is limited to those purposes; it is not a transfer of ownership.

You can request deletion as described in the privacy policy. Removal stops future use of the source contribution in new readings, subject to lawful retention and temporary caches. It cannot recall copies already downloaded or shared by other people, or undo prior uses of aggregate information.

Respect the work behind the map.

OpenStreetMap data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Overture Places data is supplied under the license recorded for its release. Attribution and other source-license requirements still apply when you reuse source data. See the city source report for the imported datasets and dates.

Aloka’s name, logo, interface, software, and original editorial content are not automatically licensed under the underlying data licenses. Ask us before reusing them in a way that suggests endorsement. Nothing here removes rights granted directly by an open-data or open-source license.

Do not bypass access controls, scrape private account information, disrupt the service, or use Aloka to profile or target individuals or communities. Please report a security issue privately to the team without accessing other people’s records.

Trust requires review.

We may hold, redact, reject, or remove contributions and restrict accounts that violate these terms or the guidelines. New observations may need corroboration before affecting the public map. Payment cannot buy a higher score, favourable moderation, or route placement.

Use the report action on a Lantern or contact us about a decision. Include a content link and a short explanation without repeating private or harmful details. The team can review corrections and appeals.

An evolving service, with your rights intact.

We work to keep Aloka useful and available, but do not promise uninterrupted access or that every record is accurate or suitable for a particular decision. Features, coverage, and access may change. Keep your own copy of information you need.

To the extent permitted by applicable law, the service is provided as available without additional warranties. Nothing in these terms excludes liability or consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded, or limits a remedy you have under mandatory local law.

Contact the Aloka team first about a dispute so we can try to resolve it. These terms do not require you to waive a statutory right to bring a claim in an appropriate forum.

Changes are dated on this page. We will make material changes clear through the service where appropriate. You can stop using Aloka and delete your account if you do not agree to revised terms.

For a question, privacy request, correction, or appeal, write to us. Include only the information needed to understand the request.
